On September 21, 2023, a charter bus transporting New York high school band students crashed on I-84 and rolled down a 50-foot ravine on September 21, 2023. The bus was one of six charters transporting students to a band camp in Pennsylvania. The incident caused the death of two occupants – the band director and an adult chaperone – and injured 45 other occupants. The accident has been reported to have caused the most injuries and deaths of any single-vehicle collision in New York in the last ten years.
New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, stated in a press conference that it is believed a faulty front tire contributed to the accident, although it is still under investigation. The operator of the bus, Long Island-based Regency Transportation LTD, was recently rated as “unacceptable” by New York’s Transportation Department for having a high out-of-service or vehicle inspection failure rate. Whether or not that rating played a part in this collision is yet to be determined.
